That's what I am these days. With school starting and all. I have to say, I did a pretty good job of writing this summer-especially through August. Well, be that the middle of August. Then we were at the cabin for a week. We have no internet there, so it was a little difficult to post. So then there was no new writing. There should have been, but there wasn't.
See, even when I don't have a computer in front of me, I should still write. Really. What did we do before computers and email? Handwrite a note. Write in a journal. I've gotten so used to writing so quickly using the computer that actual writing seems a bit laborious. It shouldn't, but it does. So I didn't write. But, hopefully that will all change.
One week of school is done. J's birthday is tomorrow, so there will definitely be something to write about then. I have A LOT of catching up to do from the last few weeks with the cabin, the State Fair, the first day of school...there will be lots for me to write and lots for you to read! So, just be patient. More will come. At least for those of you reading...of which I'm not really sure how many of you there are! But for you and for me-more to come. Soon!

More than half-way
Did you know I challenged myself at the beginning of the month? Well, I did. I challenged myself to write (at least) a 6-word story every single day in August. I think I've hit every day except two. Pretty good, right?! Please say right. Thanks.
Writing does things for me that working out does for other people. It's like a release. I get to quickly type out my thoughts, usually then publishing them right away. I'm not the type of writer who hims and haws at what I've written, wondering what I could/would/should change. Nope. I'm not that type of writer.
I'm the kind that can hardly wait to get my thoughts out before I forget what it was that I wanted to write about. I've even been known to text/email friends about the post, crossing my fingers that they'll get back to me by the time I'm to the end so I can add in whatever it was I forgot. See, there are others that write, edit, write some more, make sure everything is perfect, maybe edit some more again, and THEN publish. Not me.
Writing is a sprint. A thoughtful sprint. I suppose I do my pre-writing as the day goes on or as I'm in the moment. Like the post about our bike ride on Friday...I did my pre-"writing" as I was riding my bike, following my family, taking pictures as we went, thinking in my head about what pictures I needed so I could do the writing I wanted. Everyone has their own way-that's mine!
If you've been following along for the month, thank you! If you haven't, you have a month full of 6 word stories (or more) to catch up on! I hope I can finish my challenge...stick with me to find out!

6 word stories
I'm challenging myself. 6 word stories, every day in August. They may be current events that have happened that day. They could be stories about what's on my mind. They might be stories about things I have forgotten to write about. Of course pictures will included (when possible) to help tell the story.
I'm going to try to write more than just those 6 words. I think about that and how it would really limit me in my writing. So after thinking about it for all of about 30 seconds, I have decided that the challenge is really to write every day-knowing 6 words isn't a lot to come up with-but I've also decided that it will hopefully help me write more! Kind of reminds me of some of these SOLSC posts from March!
What do you think?

6 word stories
I am inspired by my husband and his 6 word stories he posted yesterday. It's late and seems like a good place to start. Hopefully it'll give you a little insight to my day today. Enjoy!
New technology all morning is overwhelming.
Sunshine makes me smile after school.
Bike riding down ally all afternoon.
Eating malts before dinner; nothing better.
Basketball players try hard to win.
What is your 6 word story for today?

Reflecting
Embarking on a writing challenge like this one during the month of March is just that: a challenge. I like a challenge. Especially one that benefits me in the long run. Not really visibly on the outside to anyone else, but internally it benefits me. Why? Because I get to reflect. On big things. On little things. On life. On my kids. On my husband. On anything.
My favorite to reflect on? The little things. Why? Because we NEVER get to take the time to do that. Ever. Think about it! When was the last time you thought about what went into sidewalk art? What you had for breakfast? Being sick? Right. Not very often.
I'm not saying that I really want to write about the everyday things every day. Don't get me wrong. I love writing about the big things. I love writing about the exciting things. I love writing about the really good things in life. But here's the problem: with me, that kind of writing has to be "perfect."
That's the challenge for me. To not make all of my writing "perfect." I know there are many people who blog the day before or days before or maybe even work on a post weeks ahead of time, but I'm not that kind of writer. I never really have been. So for me, it is hard to get something written when I know it might not carry the voice or message that I want it to. That's why sometimes (not this month) I end up not writing a post for a week or more.
The biggest downside to this for me is that when there is a big thing that has happened in life like Christmas, a big family trip, or a wedding, I don't always write like I hope to. For example, I've written about our trip to Disney World but I haven't written about the entire trip-only days 1, 2 and the beginning of day 3. This is one of those times where I tried to remember EVERYTHING we did and things people said during the trip. But guess what. That didn't work because I still sit here, and still haven't written about the rest of the trip. Ugh!
As I continue through the rest of this month and the challenge of writing every day, here are some goals I have for myself: finish writing about Disney (yes!), write about the everyday things, keep a list of what I want to write about (that's another problem-being overwhelmed with all of the ideas) , and to NOT WORRY about my writing being perfect. That's it-only 4 goals-all attainable. I know they are. So I will keep writing and writing and writing!
And thanks again, Stacey, for bringing this up as a topic of writing. It is oh-so-good to reflect!

Snow
or lack thereof. Today we were supposed to get a really big snow storm. Last week the forecast called for up to 12 inches of snow. Today, we're getting about 1 inch. Seriously. Ironically, we had a writing cohort meeting last week and the writing prompt given to the group was about snow. It came from the book Driftless (now on my "to read" list) and was about an in-depth description about the snow as it fell on the farm. Our job after that was to write for 5 minutes, being inspired by what we heard. Here is what I wrote:
Snow-
When you have little ones, even the littlest amount of snow makes a huge difference. Half an inch of snow to 1 foot of snow-it doesn't really matter. Snowmen are immediately asked for. Sometimes delivered, sometimes not-you know, it depends on the stickiness of it. Snowmen families end up in our front yard. A makes sure there are hats for all. Scarves too. We take food from the fridge and the candy jar to make the face as best as we can. And then, it melts. Almost as quickly as we've created it, it seems, the snow melts away, leaving hats lying on the ground. Leaving treats and snacks for the squirrels. Leaving the kids wondering what happened to their family. But all the while knowing they'll be back again some other winter day.
Writing prompts are funny things. Not funny ha-ha, but funny, ironic. I don't always have something to write about but the days I do, I'm off and going. On this day I could have gone a different way with my writing-about how much I dislike snow. Somehow dislikes are always seen differently when there are kids around!

The Last Day
No, not the last day ever of me blogging. But the last day of my writing challenge for the month of March. Yes, I did it! I missed only 3 days, I think, which I'm pretty excited about. When I took the challenge, I wasn't sure about it. I thought about my writing and how I had been blogging prior to this month. I tried to make it perfect with the perfect words and picture to go with them. Through this month, though, I've learned to appreciate the little moments. I've learned to write down the small moments in life. Funny...that's what I teach my kids to do! I should learn from my own modeling, right? Right.
I think this month has changed me for the better. Both as a writer and as a mom and as a ___ (fill in the blank with whatever other title I have in my life). As a result, I hope I can continue to have the same attitude. Perhaps I'll write 5 of 7 days or maybe more. I'm not sure yet. What I do know is that I will write whatever I can whenever I can. And I'll hope that someone is reading and that (hopefully) they like it, care about it or laugh at what I've written. That's all a writer can hope for, right?
